Sailing Instructor Jobs Profile

Sailing Instructor

Sailing Instructor jobs are available all over the world at watersports centres, sailing clubs and activity holiday centres and resorts. In the UK most sailing jobs will be seasonal, running from March/April to September/October. Freelance jobs for Dinghy Instructors may also be available with UK centres that run weekend, evening or school holiday courses.

You will need an RYA (Royal Yachting Association) Instructor qualification to find the best sailing jobs. Qualifications are craft-specific, e.g. A RYA Dinghy Sailing Instructor award will qualify you to teach adult level 1 & 2 dinghy courses as well as Youth Sailing Scheme levels 1,2, 3 & 4. You will need to meet these criteria:

  • Minimum age - 16 yrs
  • Valid first aid certificate: either the RYA first aid course or one recognised by the Health & Safety Executive, covering the treatment of hypothermia and a minimum of 6 hours course length
  • RYA Powerboat Level 2 certificate
  • Pre-entry sailing assessment completed within 1 year prior to the instructor training course

Higher level sailing qualifications include RYA Senior Instructor, RYA Club Racing Coach and RYA Coach/Assessor. For further information on sailing instructor qualifications visit the Instructor Resources pages on the RYA Training website.
