Surfing Instructor
Surf Instructor jobs may be full time or part time. Full time surfing jobs are usually seasonal, running from April to September/October. Freelance Surf Instructors may be offered part time or casual employment by Surf Schools that run weekend, evening or holiday courses.
The entry level coaching award offered by national governing body Surfing England is the Surf Instructor award. This aims to qualify you to teach beginner groups under controlled conditions in waist depth water. Maximum groups size of 8.
Course prerequisites:
Minimum age: 16 years (junior instructor, 18 years (adult surf instructor)
Demonstrate a minimum level of surfing ability:
- Able to paddle out and turtle roll
- Catch green waves, bottom turn and trim left and right
Complete the following:
- Signed Coaches Code of Conduct (within online learning course)
- Up to date Beach Lifeguard or Surf Lifesaving award
Requirement coming soon for all instructors:
- Completed Safeguarding training: Either the Surfing England Surf Safeguarding Course or the NSPCC Safeguarding in Sport online module
